In the early 2000s this represented a challenge for Massimo Zaurrini, one of the founders of Internationalia srl, editorial group of InfoAfrica and Africa and Business. Interview by Marika de Sandoli.

M.d.S.
On the occasion of the 2018 Fuorisalone, the first edition of Milan # Dakar opened a dialogue between African and Italian makers. In this perspective, which are the African areas most open to start a dialogue with Italy?
M.Z.
Africa has always had a strong link with our country that has never been interrupted over the centuries. Even economically, it is taking on an increasingly important role for us. There are no more predisposed areas than others towards Italy. We can say that countries like Senegal and Ghana have a culturally closer relationship due to the presence of large communities in our territory and to the phenomenon of returning immigration. Angola, Ethiopia and Mozambique have shown interest in Italian fashion and design. These are little known aspects of the continent that the Milan # Dakar project has certainly helped to underline.
M.d.S.
What commercial sectors benefit the most in terms of expansion possibilities?
M.Z.
In our opinion African economic development will be based on three major pillars:
agribusiness and the transformation of agricultural products for local markets,
the infrastructure and construction sector,
and energy sector, above all renewable energy.
Italy should focus on these areas because they are rich in growth opportunities both for our country and for Africa.
We also have to keep an eye on African furniture, kitchen and fashion design, areas that are often underestimated and that present the most interesting growth margins.
M.d.S.
What are the African countries with the greatest economic potential and what are the differences between the various areas of the continent?
M.Z.
Africa is a huge continent, consisting of 54 countries growing at different speeds. The most “fast” in recent years have proven to be Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Uganda Rwanda, Mozambique, Nigeria, Morocco. East Africa is also developing strongly, while slower rhythms are recorded in the southern part. This is partly due to the increase in the prices of raw materials and also to the climatic difficulties: the drought has slowed down the development of agriculture and water, a source of income for these areas.

Challenging stereotypes and telling a different story about Africa – back in the early 2000s this was the bold vision of Massimo Zaurrini, co-founder of Internationalia srl

[25
13,4
