Why has become the new religion of the people, consecrating the female figure to its altar? Why from a marginal industry, producer of clothes has become a dispenser of lifestyles, icons, spiritual guidance? How was it possible to legitimate under the eyes of everyone, especially of “emancipated“ women , this sacrifice of the female figure at the altar of aesthetics? Furthermore: how is it possible that aesthetics has been so strictly focused on women’s body?
Perhaps is this another proof of our animal origins, of the fact that despite women emancipation, men are still the one who direct the world? The one that need to be charmed, conquered? What would the old feminists say of the new female stereotypes that fashion serves us up?
Fashion is a behavior that varies over time, regarding the ways of life, customs and clothing. This is the definition provided on any dictionary.
Fashion is the mirror of society and under the appearences that change it’s always possible to identify more complex processes of change (such as cultural, social, ethical changes).
For many people fashion is the distinctive element that characterizes our social being. When it comes to fashion, communication is above all a matter of images, which often serve as icons for evoking the brand.
In the fashion world, the success of the brand often dispenses a line of conduct; the brand is an instrument of social transformation.
For this to happen, the designer, or rather the economic system that lies behind, must become the creator of a style, in which the product is a qualifying part. And the woman body is the medium that fashion often uses to disseminate this style. In fashion, women are identified with the extreme beauty. But for how long can women hold this role?
Most women are increasingly dissatisfied, driven to aspire to an image almost unattainable; yes, because being beautiful is a matter of chance, fate…
The passage from a fashion phenomenon to a style one, or as somebody prefer to say, to a way of life, it’s the ultimate goal of any marketing process, achieved by focusing on the brand image for creating a unique and easily recognizable iconography.
But what’s about the female figure in the collective imagination? The transformation of the fashion industry, which opened to global markets, has led to the enhancement of the brand.
But if the protagonist of this communication is the female body, what happened to femininity? How far can the ambitions of the collective imagination go?
The success of certain products is an easy example to follow, with a little research and minimal risks.
This is the uniformity; the image is no more unique and the quality of the product no longer justify the difference in value between a brand and the other, and so often there is no more time to create a tradition of products. At this point the image communication is the only way to distinguish. But all this is nothing new. In the collective imagination symbols have been directly associated to ways of behaving and life philosophies.
The fashion market, like a new religion with its idols and its places of worship, (the shops…), uses women in the same way in which parties use symbols, like hunters use lures…

Fashion design influences our lives by creating new stereotypes.
