UK

“But why we Orientals love the beauty that arises from the shadow? The Westerners have also lived without electricity, gas, petroleum for ages but I don’t think they love the shadow as we do. Even their ghosts are different from ours. Ours never had legs while theirs have lower limbs and above all they are diaphanous. Our imagination hesitates on clots of shadows while the Westerners give their ghosts the transparency of glass.

The colours that we love of the objects of the daily life are the result of layers of darkness. The Westerners love what’s bright as it represents the day light. We appreciate silver and copper when they get the glaze of time. For Westerners this glaze looks durty and unhygienic… In the rooms where they live, they illuminate every recess and whiten every wall and ceiling. They cut the grass in the fields while we love them covered with forests. What’s the origin of so different tastes?

Is it so that we Orientals accept the limites and circumstances of life? We accept the shadow as it is without repulsion. When light is feeble we let darkness fall down and find a beauty in it. On the opposite Occident trust progress and wants change… Not only our natures are different but also our skin tone. I was always questioning myself about the influence that the skin tone might have on our culture. The Japanise have always prefered white skin rather than dark skin. It’s a matter of fact that some of us have a skin that’s lighter than the European average. Even in Occident there are people with a skin tone darker than the Japanese average. I don’t think that the difference stays in a major or minor degree of whitness: a certain tonality distinguish our skin.

Time ago… in the evenings I happened to go in the restaurants and dance halls frequented by Westerners. I attendied to their parties and could observe their skin closely: it wasn’t that white!… There were Japanese women there who exhibited western style evening dresses which were not different from those of foreigners, and had very clear skin. Why, then, they distinguished immediately from the Westerners already from a distance? For something thick and muddy, that was in their skin. Although they had striven to lighten their backs, arms, even underarms, in short, all exposed parts of their body, a pigment shadow continued to stagnate beneath the epidermis. Observing them was like discovering from the top, a longer accumulated dirt, in the bottom of a clear stretch of water. …The skin of Westerners, even when it is very dark, however, retains a subcutaneous whiteness and purity, in no part of their body appears our dubious opacity and greasiness.

Among Westerners, a Japanese feels like an ink stain diluted, on a white sheet.
It’s a vague, incongruous, and unpleasant feeling. Perhaps a similar discomfort enables to penetrate, at least in part, in the psychology of the whites who repell the other races. Irritated, the sensitivity of the whites does not tolerate any portion of shade that a person of color introduces into the whiteness of the universe. I do not know what happens in America today, but I’ve heard telling that, during the Civil War, hatred and contempt… were not only directed toward the blacks, but also to the mestizos, the children of mestizos, the sons of the sons of a white and a mestizo. One half, one quarter, one-sixteenth, one thirty-second of black blood appeared equally unbearable to proponents of immaculation without veils. Their exercised eyes had learned to distinguish every secret grain of darkness and opacity, under the skin white.

At this point it is easy to justify the ancient wedding between Japan and the shadow. To give value to our peculiar beauty, we needed to live in dark places, and between objects with softened colors. So wanted our ancients, not because they were aware of the veil of shadow on their skin… but because through a range of pale colors, the Japanese body harmonized with its civilization.” (Selected from Chapter 13 of the Book of Shadow by Junichiro Tanizaki)

Among Westerners a Japanese person may feel like a faint ink stain on a pristine white sheet.
