Ylenia Deriu è designer di accessori e gioiello contemporaneo. La sua ricerca trova ispirazione nella complessità morfologica della natura e nella razionalità della produzione industriale. Proprio dalla natura e nello specifico dai coleotteri trae ispirazione la sua collezione di gioielli Elitre.
Elitre nasce dalla collaborazione di Ylenia Deriu con il ricercatore ed entomologo Adrea Colla del Museo di Storia Naturale di Trieste.
Con Elitre, Ylenia Deriu si propone di avvicinare le persone al mondo degli insetti, così indispensabili per la sopravvivenza della specie umana.

Perché hai deciso di creare una collezione di gioielli sugli insetti, e nello specifico sui coleotteri?
YD
Ho sempre amato molto gli insetti, la contrapposizione tra fascino e repulsione che solitamente questi animali provocano genera una tensione interessante da analizzare e rielaborare attraverso la progettazione. Ma la storia di Elitre è diversa, parla di meraviglia sia da un punto di vista formale che concettuale. Collaborando con un entomologo abbiamo scelto i coleotteri per vari motivi: sono l’ordine più numeroso in natura con più di 350.000 specie, sono dei bioindicatori straordinari e le strutture dei loro esoscheletri sono incredibili.

Come descriveresti la tua esperienza di designer di gioielli nel mondo della scienza?
YD
Spesso quando si progetta ci si ferma alla forma e all’estetica, avere la possibilità di fare ricerche più approfondite con dei professionisti è una fortuna enorme. Il progetto Elitre ha cambiato sia il mio modo di lavorare che la mia percezione del mondo e della natura.

Qual è secondo te il valore aggiunto della collaborazione interdisciplinare?
YD
Prendere in prestito linguaggi diversi da discipline diverse è sempre un buon modo di cambiare la prospettiva e sconvolgerla. Raccontare come in questo caso di argomenti legati alla natura, al cambiamento climatico alla deforestazione attraverso il design avvicina tipi diversi di pubblico, crea curiosità e fa riflettere.

Cos’è che secondo te rende un gioiello prezioso?
YD
Il gioiello contemporaneo ha un modo tutto suo di essere prezioso: non è più solo il materiale, o la mano d’opera, o il design a dargli valore, ma una combinazione di tutti questi fattori rielaborati e uniti all’aspetto concettuale. Tutto questo genera un’aurea magica attorno all’oggetto creando una sorta di talismano contemporaneo.

Elitre is the result of Ylenia Deriu’s collaboration with researcher and entomologist Adrea Colla of the Natural History Museum in Trieste.
With Elitre, Ylenia Deriu aims to bring people closer to the world of insects, so indispensable to the survival of the human species.

Why have you decided to create a jewels collection about insects and specifically the Elitre project?
YD
I have always loved insects so much. They are animals that can cause fascination and repulsion at the same time. This contrast generates an interesting tension that can be analyzed and developed through design. But the approach of Elitre project is a little bit different. Elitre tells a story of wonder, both from a formal and a conceptual point of view. I collaborated with an entomologist and we decided together to work on beetles for many reasons: they are the largest order in nature with more than 350,000 species, they are extraordinary bioindicators and the microstructures of their elytra are incredible.

How would you describe your experience as a jewelry designer in the field of science?
YD
Often we think that design is all about form and aesthetics, but there is much more. Elitre project gave me the chance develop an in-depth research with a scientific support. It allowed me to find a huge inspiration but it also changed both my way of working and my perception of the world and nature.

What’s the value added of interdisciplinary cooperation?
YD
Adopting different languages from different disciplines is always a good way to change the perspective. Using design to tell about nature, climate change and deforestation links together different types of audience, creates curiosity and hopefully makes you think.

What’s for you the preciousness of jewellery?
YD
Contemporary jewelry has its own way of being precious. It is not just about the material, or the workmanship, or the design. Preciousness is given by the combination of all these factors reworked and combined together with the conceptual approach. All of this generates a magical aura around the object, creating a sort of contemporary talisman.
